Stone Fiddle Castle Cadlwell Notebook 

The Stone Fiddle is located at the entrance to Castle Caldwell Forest Park in Co, Fermanagh. It is a memorial to Denis McCabe, a local fiddler, who drowned in August 1770.

The memorial was commissioned by his employer, Sir James Caldwell.

The drowning of Denis occurred while he was drunkenly entertaining, the equally inebriated guests of Sir James upon the "St. Patrick's Barge". 

The accident occurred not far from Castle Caldwell under Magho Cliffs on Lower Lough Erne. 

Denis McCabe's body was never recovered but the Fiddle Stone Memorial ensured his name is still remembered today.

The inscription on the stone reads: 

"To the memory of Denis McCabe Fidler,
Who fell out of the
St. Patricks Barge belonging to
Sir James Caldwell, Bart, and Count of Milan
And was drowned off this point August ye 15 1770
Beware Ye fidlers of ye fidlers fate,
Nor tempt ye deep lest ye repent to late;
You ever have been deemed to water foes,
Then shun ye lake till it with whiskey flows,
On firm land only exercise your skill,
There you may play and drink your fill".
