Irish Celtic Drinks Coaster - Salmon of Knowledge
From the ancient Irish stories of Fionn MacCool. Ideal gift for someone engaged in study or "acquiring wisdom"
The story of the salmon of knowledge comes from the tale entitled 'The boyhood deeds of Fionn' from 'The Fenian Cycle' of Irish Mythology. The story tells that as a boy Fionn was in service to a poet who had spent many years fishing for the elusive 'Salmon of Knowledge'. Anyone who consumed this particular fish would receive unlimited wisdom and the poet was dedicated to catching and eating it. The poet eventually did catch the fish and gave it to Fionn to prepare and cook it for him. However, Fionn accidentally burned his thumb when he touched the fish to check if it was cooked. He immediately put his thumb in his mouth to ease the searing pain of the burn and received the gift of wisdom.
When the poet found out he forgave Fionn as it was an accident and allowed him to eat the rest of the fish. For the rest of Fionn's life whenever he put his thumb in his mouth he was able to call upon universal wisdom and knowledge.
