Author's note:

"This is the story of Castle Caldwell and its families for over 300 years. It is meant to be an enjoyable story of the lives of the people of west Fermanagh and adjoining Donegal but nevertheless to have full academic rigour as well. I originally set out to write and article bringing together the then meagre published material about Castle Caldwell. However the discovery of the Caldwell family papers, then unknown to Irish historians, in the John Ryland's Library in Manchester changed everything and the result of research there and other places such as California and Quebec is now contained in this book".
