A Lost Catalina
By Joe O'Loughlin with Jen Jones
Back cover
On 2nd November 1943, Catalina FP120 took off from Lough Erne to take part in an operational training exercise in the Atlantic off the Irish coast. The pilot was F/Lt. Edward Earle Muffitt with his crew of eight. He flew along the River Erne, passing over Belleek village along the Donegal Corridor over Ballyshannon town to reach the designated position near Rockall Island off the coast of Ireland. As instructed, he radioed base giving his position and released two depth charges. This was the last to be heard of Ted Muffitt and his crew.
His wife Hester got the usual official telegram telling that her husband was killed in action. His grieving widow was left alone to bring up their two children, Norman - 17 months old and his sister, Monda, aged 5 months. Ted had been a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Norman went on to become a member and a pilot, as well. For much of his adult life, Norman carried out an investigation to try and find out how his dad had died without much success. Then unexpectedly, about 2008, he was contacted by three wise men from the East - Alan Deller, Les Ingram, and Joe O'Loughlin. Norm finally got the information that has eluded him for so many years.
